Time Management

Have you ever felt you need more time for studying and homework assignments? Or maybe you wished the day to be 36 hours long? Unfortunately, we only have 24 hours to get things done, and according to some experts, it all comes down to good time management.

To be more specific, time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_management).

Time management first appeared when the early humans started to select what activities to do by day, and what by night, hence the first form of time management. As evolution progressed, a lot more activities became available, but were they doable? Again, time management was required in order to succeed.

However, different cultures understand time differently. The United States and Mexico employ time in such diametrically opposing manners that it causes intense friction between the two peoples. In Britain the future stretches out in front of you. In Madagascar it flows into the back of your head from behind. The country that best deals with time management would be the one that has found the optimum between the linear and cyclic conception of time, that is to see the past as something we have put behind us and the future as something that lies before us. (http://www.businessinsider.com/how-different-cultures-understand-time-2014-5).
Understanding time management advantages and disadvantages will help you evaluate your abilities and skills and start planning your working time better.
Time management disadvantages are:
  • Discipline and self-improvement are mandatory. You have to discipline yourself and work on self-improvement.
  • Access to technologies is required. You have to constantly read information about new techniques.
Time management advantages are:
People in the UAE, including me, have to manage time in accordance with the cultural and religious beliefs. For example, during the month of Ramadan, we save energy and sleep early in order to be effective. In addition, we wake up earlier in the last few days of Sha'aban, so that the body is not craving for a sleep when we are focusing on work or prayers. To sum up, in order to be effective members of any society, people have to find the best way to finish everything they have started in a timely fashion. And even though studies show various ways to manage time, I believe it is up to the individual to best schedule the tasks at hand and complete them successfully.
